About the project

Next11 is developing a new sports tracking system for semi-professional teams that will democratize the use of data in football. The core of its primary system is a small tracker device worn by players. The counterpart is a particular ball with live tracking inside it and a tablet App as a control panel for coaches and managers, in which I helped with the key visuals and all UI components.

Process

To develop a redesigned UI, we first had to get the device prototypes of the tracker and the ball. Based on the data that those devices gave us, we created a working iPad App that
could send and receive data from players in real-time.
We made in-depth field tests with real coaches and teams to collect their challenges and ideas.
We also took some parts of the existing App UI Design and gave the app a new modern look that was recognizable as a sports app and could hold many information and data visualizations.

Based on our experiences using devices outdoors, I decided to come up with a rather dark look for much visibility in sunlight conditions.

Research and Prototyping

The test and ideation phase was fun. We went to the research lab of Fraunhofer Institute playing football to measure data and checking the accuracy of basic data sets like numbers of passes, ball speed, ball location etc. I worked closely with engineers and developers to ensure that the data transcripted well into the designated visuals.
